Searching for real estate and homes for sale in La Plata County, Colorado? You'll find all kinds of homes for sale in La Plata County in southwestern Colorado. There are tremendous single-family homes, townhouses and duplexes throughout the county. Centrally located, Durango is the county seat, with dozens of residences and vacant lots for sale. Outside of Durango, you can find affordable homes in towns like Bayfield and Ignacio and in Census-designated communities like Southern Ute and Marvel. There are even homes in more remote areas of the state, in one of the county's many unincorporated areas and ghost towns.
The most affordable real estate in the county is permanently placed mobile homes that start around $100,000. Several mobile homes are for sale just north of Durango near Trimble and Hermosa. Mobile homes in the area typically have three bedrooms and two bathrooms with about 1,000 square feet of living space.
Purgatory ski resort is along U.S. Highway 550, north of Durango, Trimble and Hermosa. Near Purgatory is where you'll find larger estate homes with multiple bedrooms listed in the $1 million to $5 million range, depending on size, age, amenities, location and views. A modern three-bedroom, four-bathroom house with more than 3,800 square feet of living space is approximately $3 million.
There are also several ski condos near Purgatory. A one-bedroom ski condo with about 800 feet of living space only a short distance from the ski lifts at the resort is priced at about $475,000. You can purchase a larger townhouse with three bedrooms and more than 2,000 square feet of space for around $1 million. A four-bedroom ski condo at a new luxury development costs approximately $1.5 million.
Near Durango, you'll find all types of real estate for sale, from high-end luxury homes to smaller condos and mobile homes. There are also numerous undeveloped lots that are perfect for building the future home of your dreams. Smaller residences with fewer bedrooms and under 1,000 square feet of living space start at around $350,000. More prominent homes with about 1,500 square feet of space are available for closer to $550,000 or $600,000.
For those seeking a more remote spot, there are terrific pockets of homes just southeast of Durango off U.S. Highway 160 in the $450,000 to $650,000 range. Northeast of Durango is more upscale properties along Florida Road for $1 million to $2 million. For those wanting an ideal ranch property, consider vacant lots west of Durango near the communities of Hesperus, Mayday and Breen. Vallecito Reservoir, northeast of Durango, presents opportunities to own a beautiful home near the water.

La Plata County is neighbored by San Juan County to the north, Hinsdale County to the northeast, and Archuleta County to the east. It borders Dolores County to the northwest and Montezuma County to the west. San Juan County, New Mexico, is due south.
The county is home to the San Juan National Forest and the Weminuche Wilderness. It also has two notable trails, the Colorado Trail and the Old Spanish National Historic Trail.
